Homing Pigeons or Rock Dove

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Could I raise my own white pigeons or doves?

Yes, you can if you have the space available to house them, feed them and clean up after them.  You must have time and knowledge to train and care for these birds.  Training a white homing pigeon can take up to a year before ready to home from an event.  The training is done daily as a youngster.

A pigeon can live up to 20 years in captivity.

What happens to the birds when the are released? Our homing birds return to their loft at my home.  They have food and water waiting for them.
How do they know? These are amazing animals and no one can explain how they can navigate themselves back to their home.  These birds have the ability to fly 700 miles in one day.   Homing pigeons were used in World War I to carry important messages hundreds of miles.
Do the birds always make it home? After a release, my birds usually are home before I am.   My birds are very valuable to me and I worry about them every time they are released and sometimes they do not come home.  I have had my birds come home up to a year later.  I have had other birds come live with me for a short time and then leave to go back to their home.
How do you know that they are your birds? All of my birds have a National Pigeon Association band on their leg with the year they were banded and registration number on it.  This number tells us how old the bird is and who it belongs to.  If someone finds my birds the can contact the NPA and call me.
How do you  train the birds? Our birds start their training at about 4 months old by releasing them close to home.  Once they are comfortable flying and returning home from just a block away from my home, I then start taking them a little farther away.  This process can take months.  After they are a year old, I then start taking them one mile from home, then I keep taking them farther and farther until I feel comfortable that they will succeed and make it home.   Generally, birds are not used in ceremonies until they are about 1-1 1/2 years old.
How can you be sure that the birds wont relieve themselves on my dress or my guests?Just like human athletes, we feed our birds a special diet prior to a release or photography session.    Pigeons/Doves are the only bird that will not defecate as the fly.  They will only go when they are perching or at rest.
What is the difference of a Pigeon and a dove?Pigeons or otherwise known as “Rock Doves”.  Rock doves are the pigeons that you see as wild birds.  Our birds are hybrids of the Rock Dove.  We have bred them to be white because their symbolism and their amazing homing ability.
Why cant I use the dove in the pet store? These birds make lovely pets and are often kept inside.  The smaller white doves that you find in pet stores are referred to as Ringneck Doves, Mourning Doves or Turtle doves are untrained, do not have the homing instinct, and do not know how to survive in wild, and will seldom survive on their own.  I have these beautiful white birds available for a beautiful alter or receiving table display.
Can I bring my gun?NO GUYS, YOU CANT BRING YOUR GUN.
